Resumo: Introducion: Breastfeeding is important not only for the baby, but also for the mother, since in addition to accelerating the maturation of the intestinal mucosa and having immunologicals that provide protection to the infant, it also reduces puerperal bleeding and acceelerates uterine involution. Objective: Assess the frequency of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the city of Tubarão – Santa Catarina, with 180 women who were mothers between 2016 e 2019. The research was carried out through an online questionnaire and the mothers were selected through a list of records in the basic health units of the municipality. Results: It was found that the frequency of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months was 70%. There was a positive association between early weaning and insufficient milk, fissure and breast engorgement. Conclusion: The values are well above the Brazilian average, a fact that can be justified by the higher maternal age of the mothers participating in the study, as well as a higher level of education and marital status.
