Neste artigo o conflito que envolveu duas famílias de proprietários rurais da região sul de Pernambuco. O objetivo é analisar práticas e representações sociais que sustentavam o poder dos senhores de terra, durante a crise das oligarquias agrárias na Primeira República brasileira. Neste caso as famílias Peregrino e Marques, adversárias pelo controle e posse do engenho Cachoeira Bela. Conflito que culminou, em dezembro de 1919,  depois de várias mortes, no assassinato do senador estadual Fausto Freire de Carvalho Figueiredo, por um septuagenário membro dos Marques: seu patriarca Antônio Marques Soares da Costa. Um contexto  de violência e impunidade, diante daquele discurso onde a oligarquia, nos jornais recifenses, defendia ideias de civilidade e modernidade.This article investigates the conflict involving two families of rural owners in the city of Palmares. The Peregrino and Marques clans, opponents for control and possession of the Cachoeira Bela farm, located in the Maraial District, sugarcane region of Pernambuco, Brazil. The research considers practices and representations of violence and impunity contextualized by the notes published in the capital Recife. Some of them signed by the patriarchs involved, their relatives or supporters. This research strategy highlights the confrontation between the ideas about civility and modernity - that were widely published in the newspapers of the time - and the contrast with the published news about the violence committed in the sugarcane region. A history of land disputes involving local power and the political issues of the Colonels system.
