Immigrants’ perception of business opportunities in Spain: the impact of general and specific human capital

Resumo: Perceiving business opportunities is an importantpart of entrepreneurship. This study analyzeshow immigrants’ general and specific humancapital influences their likelihood of perceivingbusiness opportunities. Analysis focuses oncomparison between a group of immigrants anda group of Spanish citizens. Data from the 2008Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) wasused. Logistic regression was used to analyzedata. Results revealed that both immigrants’ andSpanish citizens’ human capital such as educationis not significant to perceiving opportunities.Much to the contrary: the impact of specifichuman capital on perceiving opportunities is ingeneral significant to both groups. This researchreveals which specific types of human capital arerelevant in the process of perceiving opportunitiesamongst immigrants. This paper is a noveltybecause it introduces a theoretical approach to theperception of opportunities within the universe ofnew businesses established by immigrants in Spain.

O presente estudoanalisa a influência do capital humano geral e específicode imigrantes em seu país de acolhimento.A análise compara um grupo de imigrantes comum grupo de espanhóis. Para o estudo, foramutilizados dados do Global Entrepreneurship Monitor(GEM) de 2008. A técnica utilizada para aanálise dos dados foi regressão logística. Os resultadosrevelaram que o capital humano – como aeducação dos imigrantes e dos espanhóis – não érelevante para a percepção de oportunidades denegócios. Pelo contrário, o impacto do capitalhumano específico na percepção de oportunidadesde negócios é em geral relevante para ambos osgrupos. Este estudo revela quais tipos específicosde capital humano são relevantes ao processo depercepção de oportunidades por imigrantes.
