Resumo: The present paper refers to the experience of the community schools developed in Favela da Rocinha (Rocinha Slum), during the period 1968 to 1986, and analyses it based on two different aspects: The urban issue the community school as a form of popular organization which, together with other community groups of Rocinha, questions the unequal allocation of public resources, and struggles to improve life conditions in the 'Favela'. The educational issue - the pedagogical practice of such schools, concerning children, youngsters and adults; the search for methodology and contents originated from the student's reality and from the objectives of community work. The case study was developed from interviews (with local leaders, educators, parents, students, outside agents and technicians) , documented sources and the author's participation in the community work at the 'Favela', started in 1976. An attempt was made to apprehend the origin of this experience, compared to the precarious/inefficient conditions of the official schooling system and to the process of reorganization of the lower classes and also, to observe the relationship between such different conjunctures and the configuration that community schools have assumed throughout this process.
