Resumo: This study investigated the level of financial literacy of Brazilian university students and its possible relationship with social capital, perceived self-efficacy, consideration of future consequences and financial stress. The sample included students enrolled in a private University in Sao Paulo. These students come from different backgrounds, in terms of geographical origin, race, gender, age, marital status, socio-economic class, and family income. A factor analysis and a hierarchical regression were conducted. The factor analysis on the scales of financial self-efficacy, consideration of future consequences, and financial stress indicated that these instruments are appropriate for use with the sample college students. The findings revealed that some components of social capital, such as the level of father's education and the number of courses taken in finance have positive relation with the level of financial literacy of college students. The family income level and maternal education were not relevant. As for the other variables studied, the perceived self-efficacy was not related to the level of financial education, however, consideration of future consequences and financial stress could be related to the level of financial education of social subjects. The research question, the general and specific objectives, as well as the assumptions defined in the study were, respectively, answered, achieved and confirmed.

A amostra utilizada constituiu-se de alunos matriculados no ano de 2014, do quinto ao oitavo semestre, no curso de Administra????o, nos campi de S??o Paulo, de uma universidade privada, que possui, em seu quadro de discentes, a heterogeneidade de indiv??duos, em termos de origem geogr??fica, ra??a, g??nero, faixa et??ria, estado civil, classe s??cio-econ??mica, e renda familiar mensal. A pesquisa caracterizou-se como descritiva, com m??todo quantitativo, tendo sido utilizadas as t??cnicas estat??sticas de an??lise fatorial explorat??ria e a regress??o m??ltipla hier??rquica, para tratamento dos dados. O estudo revelou que alguns componentes do capital social, como o n??vel de educa????o do pai e o n??mero de disciplinas cursadas em finan??as t??m rela????o positiva com o n??vel de educa????o financeira dos estudantes universit??rios. J?? o n??vel de renda familiar e o n??vel de educa????o materna n??o foram relevantes. Quanto ??s demais vari??veis pesquisadas, a auto-efic??cia percebida tamb??m n??o apresentou rela????o com o n??vel de educa????o financeira, por??m, a considera????o de conseq????ncias futuras na tomada de decis??es financeiras e o estresse financeiro puderam ser relacionados ao n??vel de educa????o financeira dos sujeitos de pesquisa.
