Summary: This article analyses the book 1984, written by George Orwell, establishing relation with the totalitarian regimes in the twentieth century, highlighting the context of both censorship and repression in Brazil experienced during two distinct periods: Vargas Era and Military dictatorship. Foucault’s theoretical base proposes discipline, vigilance, censorship and punishment as strategies of institutionalization and maintenance of power in the works The Order of Discourse and Discipline and Punish. One of the ways of control presented by Orwell’s work is the linguistic determinism being established after the creation of the Newspeak, language used for mind control in 1984. In this context, it is approached the Newspeak as being related to the extreme version of Sapir-Whorf hypothesis of the linguistic determinism, which, in discussion, cannot be supported utterly.

Editora da PUCRS - ediPUCRS2018-07-19info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/ojs/index.php/letronica/article/view/2807610.15448/1984-4301.2018.2.28076Letrônica; Vol. 11 No. 2 (2018): Enunciation and Argumentation in Semantics; 192-209Letrônica; v. 11 n. 2 (2018): Enunciação e argumentação em semântica; 192-2091984-430110.15448/1984-4301.2018.2reponame:letrônicainstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)instacron:PUC_RSporhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/ojs/index.php/letronica/article/view/28076/16996Copyright (c) 2018 Letrônicainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessFreitas, Emanuele Mendonça deFeltes, Heloísa Pedroso de MoraesZanella, Sílvia Maria2019-10-15T21:33:16Zoai:ojs.revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br:article/28076Revistahttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/ojs/index.php/letronicaPRIhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/ojs/index.php/letronica/oailetronica@pucrs.br||ivanetemileski@gmail.com1984-43011984-4301opendoar:2019-10-15T21:33:16letrônica - Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)false
