Metal-insulator transition in two dimensions

Resumo: A metal-insulator transition was recently observed in a variety of two-dimensional electron and hole systems, contrary to the 20 year old belief that it is forbidden in two dimensions. The origin of this transition is still unknown and is being debated. In this paper, I briefly survey the main experimental findings and suggested explanations.
