Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the principles of legitimation of the politicians of Minas Gerais during the Brazilian First Republic. More precisely, my aim in this paper is to examine the ways in which those politicians employed discourse strategies to legitimize their claim to hold an elective office in the public service. Based on the journals of Juiz de Fora, important political center of Minas Gerais, is my intention to demonstrate how the journalistic text was presented as a fundamental mean by which politicians expressed a conventional rhetoric able to assert their positions with their peers and how this recognition was essential to obtain government positions.
