Portuguese abstract:The process of demographic transition changes the age structure of a population, with consequences such as population aging, which can bring challenges and, therefore, demands a better arrangement from public administration. In Brazil, the changes in fertility and mortality rates occur in distinct intensities by state and demographic region. In this manner, it is important to analyze the demographic transition specifically for the state of Alagoas, so that public policies can be properly planned to the future scenario of the state’s population. Therefore, the present work was elaborated aiming to present demographic data from Alagoas’ State, analyzing aspects of the demographic transition process of the population, comparing it to the same aspect of this process for Northeastern and Brazilian population’s. This study contains information that allows analyzing some demographic indicators for aging, fertility and mortality throughout time and its possible future behavior. Within this analysis, the demographic indicators were elaborated based on Demographic Census of 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010 and the population projections for 2020 and 2030, both performed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The structural changes on Alagoan population are noteworthy, where, from this study, one can observe the aging process of the population and a current scenario of socioeconomic development, with improvements on health conditions.
