Resumo: The present study aimed at analysing the nursing challenges and career opportunities in the (FHS) in a Health District of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. It is a qualitative study; data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews, observation and field diary. The study subjects were ESF nurses from seven health centres. The results demonstrated that the nurse's daily routine is characterized by work overload that impairs carrying out ESF specific actions. The challenges are the improvement of working conditions related to organization and care process; possibilities mean more autonomy so this professional can implement care practices more in tune with social policies.
