Resumo: Este artigo pretende analisar a influência da religião na construção e manutenção social da masculinidade, em oposição à representação social da feminilidade, com objetivo principal de propor pistas que contribuam para a eqüidade de gênero no campo religioso brasileiro. Para isso, observaremos o dualismo opositor construído historicamente na religião entre os ideais de masculinidade e da feminilidade; a função da religião na perpetuação dos paradigmas essencialistas de gênero; e as implicações sociais e políticas desse fenômeno para as relações sociais de sexo.
