Resumo: OBJECTIVE: To study the descriptive epidemiology of uterine cervical cancer in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from 1980 to 1994 and to observe the situation of its secondary prevention by citopathology.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Temporal series were constructed with standardized mortality rates using data from the Secretaria de Saúde e Meio Ambiente – SSMA(State of Rio Grande do Sul Health Department) and analyzed through Pearson’s correlation coefficient for temporal series. The results were compared with reports in the literature and data from the Instituto Nacional do Câncer do Brasil .RESULTS: The temporal series demonstrated a tendency to increase (P<0.001) with b=0.09.CONCLUSIONS: Mortality by uterine cervical cancer in the state of Rio Grande do Sul continues to increase, even with the efforts by SSMA to prevent it by citopathology. Suggestions are made to remedy this situation in our state
