Resumo: The aim of this study was to compare different procedures of selection in sugarcane, besides evaluating the importance of agronomic characters during the individual selection (mass) applied in the initial phases of the genetic improvement programs. In the test phase 1 (T1) selection was performed in 128 families of half-sibs by the visual method, by two breeders (Mass-1 and Mass- 2), selection via number of stalks (NC selection), selection by BLUP-seq and selection via BLUPIS. In T2 phase selection was performed via Massal - 1 and mass - 2 and via BLUP for tonnes of cane per hectare (TCH) and tonnes of sugar per hectare (TPH). Selection strategies applied in T1 stage selected 659 clones, with matches between the strategies. Of these 174 clones were selected by Massal-1, 101 by Massal-2, 278 by NC selection, 407 by BLUPIS and 417 by BLUP-seq. The selection strategies applied in T2 selected 184 clones. Out of these clones, 113 were selected by Mass-1, 35 by Mass-2, 66 clones were selected through BLUP for TCH and 66 through BLUP for TPH. Out of the 66 genotypes with the highest averages for TCH, 13 were selected in T1 through Mass-1, 4 through Mass-2, 20 through NC selection, 42 through BLUPIS and 56 through BLUP-seq. Out of the 66 clones, 67% belonged to 19 (15%) of 26 (20%) best evaluated families in T1. The selection through BLUP- seq was the one that most contributed for the clone selection with the highest averages for TCH and TPH. The characters: stalks number, bud salience and the internode length were the ones of biggest importance during the process of visual selection done in T1. The plant vigor, stalks diameter and height were the most important ones during the selection in T2. New experimental and selection strategies are presented and must be incorporated to the sugarcane improvement programs in order to accelerate the obtainment of new varieties.

New experimental and selection strategies are presented and must be incorporated to the sugarcane improvement programs in order to accelerate the obtainment of new varieties.O objetivo desse trabalho foi comparar diferentes procedimentos de seleção em cana-de-açúcar, além de avaliar a importância dos caracteres agronômicos durante a seleção massal aplicada nas fases iniciais dos programas de melhoramento genético.
