English abstract:An epidemiologic nutritional survey was conducted aiming to evaluate the socio-economical conditions of health and nutrition of elderly people recorded in the Third Age Municipal Program. 183 aged men and women participated in that study ranging from 60 to 90 years old. Socio- economical and health variance were evaluated through an interview when a questionnaire was applied to each person. The nutritional condition was evaluated through the bodily mass index (BMI) and the waist-hip ratio (WHR). An average of the food intake found between the 24-h diet recall and semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) was used in order to evaluate the adequation of nutrient eating consume and energy was calculated based on the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI`s). It was observed that the studied population has predominantly low income and low level of education. Most of them live in their own houses that are usually familiarly shared. The amount of alone- living women and widows is larger than men’s. Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages are not usual and only almost 40 % of the studied population practices some sort of physical activity. The majority of them complained of having health disturb, mainly an abnormally high blood pressure. A large use of medicine was reported and they take in, at least, one medicine every day (81,3%). They demonstrated a bipolarized nutritional profile, prevailing either a low weight (15,1%) or a high weight (40,8%). The frequency of an inadequate WHR and an increased wais circunference (WC) was meaningfully higher among women, although both sexes presented high frequencies. The energy intake was below estimated rates almost in all of them. However, a large intake of lipid sources was identified. Vitamin consume was also inadequate (Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2 and Vitamin B6). The calcium consume, reached only 1/3 of the recommended need. It was concluded that eating consume was greatly influenced by low income, living alone or with two other generations, to be edentulou, use of drug and sedentary way of life. The most usual foods were rice, beans, diary products, bread, fruits and coffee. The inadequate socio-economical conditions in terms of health and nutrition has acted negativily in life quality of the studied population. So, it is necessary to implement public policies especially directed to that population group.
