Resumo: The decision making, in most cases, is a complex procedure because it usually involves many interrelated variables and factors. In the area of software project management, specifically addressing people management, the challenge is also strongly present involving the nonlinear relationships connecting dynamic and intangible variables. Intangible variables such as stress, conflict, motivation and performance all have high impact in this area, and they are strongly related. The human mind is not capable of taking into account all paths among them and not even to map those interactions and side effects, without external computational aid. It is essential to use methods and computational tools that could aid in enacting the decision making process with a holistic view of the context, avoiding reactive decision making that often result in disastrous problems within a time delay. Simulation models using system dynamics, a modeling technique very well suited to help understanding, simulation and analysis of problems and situations with complex dynamic behavior, has shown to be a powerful choice for dealing with this type of problem. The main goal of this work is to develop and construct a system dynamics model to help understand the relationships among the main intangible variables involved in people management in software projects, providing support to decision making. The results obtained from simulations using the model developed allow us to analyze and test real-world scenarios in software project management, avoiding possible risks associated with decisions by forecasting problems that show up in simulations using the model. Possible desirable and undesirable effects of decisions along a timeline can be anticipated artificially, before they are deployed in a real project. Thus, the model can be used by managers as a support tool that assist decision making in a safer and better informed way in the area of human resources management. As a byproduct we also built a control panel that allows the setup and adjustment of the variables using sliding controls to set up scenarios to be used in simulations. We ran simulation examples which resulted in situations fully adherent to real world data and decisions, thus providing evidences that the model is consistent and could in principle be used to support real-world decision making.
