Resumo: The anthropogenic actions caused to the water resources ended up causing a decline in the quality of the water, and consequently causing damages to public health. The most important constituent of all living organisms, a fundamental element in life, is represented by water, an element which, in the present conditions of degradation caused by the actions of human beings, serves as a vehicle for the transmission of diseases. The pathogenic protozoa Cryptoporidium spp., Giardia spp., are microorganisms that can be found in this environment and are the result of fecal contamination. These microorganisms cause diseases that can present in a mild and even severe or fulminant way in immunocompromised individuals. In the Ibiraquera’s lagoon, located in the town of Imbituba / SC, there is a large increase in the number of constructions surrounding the lagoon in recent years, and possible deficiencies in its sanitary structure - domestic sewage - which may allow the arrival of contaminants in this environment. The present study had as main objective to evaluate the presence of protozoa of the genus Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. as well as environmental characteristics that favor the presence of these agents, in February of 2019 in the Ibiraquera’s lagoon, Imbituba / SC. The identification of protozoa was performed using the membrane filtration technique, associated with Ziehl Neelsen staining and microscopy. After the collection, processing and analysis of the samples, the occurrence of oocytes and cysts of the protozoa under study was confirmed, present in 59% of collection points, distributed in the sampled area, but with a higher concentration in the area closest to the urban constructions. movement of bathers. The factors associated with the distribution of protozoa in the Ibiraquera’s lagoon are related to wind, recreation activities and the resistance of infective agents in the environment. The results seek to contribute to an improvement of the studied environment, through the sensitization of the local community, since the presence of these pathogens was confirmed.
