Social representation of dental students about the field of social dentistry

Resumo: The traditional conception of the dental curriculum, divided into disciplines, had not been capable of bringing the graduated professional closer to the reality of the National Health System. In the beginning of their undergraduation course, dental students have preconceived ideas about some disciplines, but know very little about the Social Dentistry discipline and its purposes. This study aimed to investigate the previously formed perception of 3rd year dental students attending the School of Dentistry of Araçatuba, Paulista State University (FOA-UNESP) about Social Dentistry. The students had not yet taken the course on social dentisty. Each year, on the discipline’s first day of class, all students answered to the question: “Social Dentistry is....”. After three years, 195 questionnaires were collected. First, all answers were quickly read through.

First, all answers were quickly read through.A concepção tradicional do currículo odontológico, dividido em disciplinas, não foi capaz de aproximar o profissional formado da realidade do sistema nacional de saúde. No início da formação, os acadêmicos dos cursos de Odontologia são capazes de construir uma imagem da área de estudo de algumas disciplinas; porém, quanto à Odontologia Social, há desconhecimento da área de atuação. Foi objetivo do presente trabalho conhecer a percepção previamente formada sobre a Odontologia Social, de alunos do 3º ano do Curso de Odontologia da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba da Universidade Estadual Paulista (FOA-UNESP), que ainda não haviam cursado a referida disciplina. A cada ano, no primeiro dia de aula da disciplina, todos os alunos respondiam à pergunta aberta: “Odontologia Social é...”. Ao final de 3 (três) anos, foram apurados 195 questionários.
