Resumo: In this text we explore the characteristics of the built environment of a subway, focusing on the particularities of the Rio de Janeiro subway. We indicate that those characteristics resonate in the sociability that is generated there. We shape the notion of "machinical environment" in order to account for the technological component of this metropolitan space. Finally, we resort to our ethnographical data in order to investigate how subway riders address this environment in Rio de Janeiro.

Evidenciamos que tales características tienen resonancias en la sociabilidad que se produce en el metro. Construímos la expresión “ambiente maquínico” para describir este espacio y enfatizamos con esto su componente tecnológico. Utilizamos, a seguir, nuestros datos etnográficos para explorar algunos aspectos del abordaje de este espacio por los usuarios del metro de Rio de Janeiro.Neste trabalho examinamos as características do espaço construído dos metrôs em geral e em especial como se apresentam no contexto do metrô do Rio de Janeiro. Assinalamos que tais características têm ressonâncias na sociabilidade que se produz no metrô.
