Resumo: This article examines the construction of mnemonic potency in Faces of Auschwitz, project made by the colorist Marina Amaral that recuperates registration pictures took in the Nazi extermination camp and puts them in color. The work is apprehended by the way in which it reorders and subverts the purpose of original images, switching them from the attempt of subjection to the capacity for commemoration and restitution of Holocaust victims’ memory, based on the vestiges of humanity and pain. As a starting point for the discussion proposed here, the paper explores some portraits, as the one that depicts Czesława Kwoka, produced by the prisoner Wilhelm Brasse and colored by Amaral.

El trabajo se capta por la forma en que reorganiza y subvierte el propósito de las imágenes originales, desde el intento de sometimiento a la capacidad de conmemorar y restaurar la memoria de las víctimas del Holocausto, inscrito sobre las huellas de la humanidade y el dolor. El registro de la joven Czesława Kwoka, producido por el entonces prisionero Wilhelm Brasse y coloreado por Amaral, además de otros retratos, se toman como punto de partida para las discusiones aqui propuestas.   Este artigo observa a construção da potência mnemônica em Faces of Auschwitz, projeto da colorista Marina Amaral que resgata retratos de identificação feitos no campo de extermínio nazista e os põe em cores. O trabalho é apreendido pelo modo como reordena e subverte o propósito das imagens originais, levando-as da tentativa de assujeitamento à capacidade de comemoração e de restituição da memória das vítimas do Holocausto, assentada nos vestígios de humanidade e de dor. O registro da jovem Czesława Kwoka, produzido pelo então prisioneiro Wilhelm Brasse e colorizados por Amaral, além de outros retratos, são tomados como ponto de partida para as discussões aqui propostas.
