Resumo: This study sought to analize how the changes caused by the growth of the company affect the decision-making process, focusing on the transition from small to medium businesses. We attempted to fill the existing gap over this period of transition between small and medium firms, especially in the aspects addressed by the logical Causation and Effectuation, described by Sarasvathy (2001). The research was qualitative and exploratory in nature and makes use of the method of case studies through interviews with entrepreneurs, their successors and managers in the hospitality industry, which is a service sector that has had great visibility and growth in recent years. At the end of the survey, it was concluded that the transition from small to medium business affects decisions to i) increase the formalization of processes, ii) there is a small delegation of powers, iii) there is a greater distancing of the employees and senior management, iv) there is a greater concern with training of staff, v) a support team for decision making is established, vi) there is concern about the long term, vii) rational aspects are considered for decision, viii) the responsibilities become clearer and ix) more autonomy is delegated to employees.

Un tema de este tipo es muy poco explorado en la literatura, sobre todo cuando los aspectos abordados están conectados a las lógicas causation and effectuation, descritas por Sarasvathy (2001). La investigación fue cualitativa y exploratoria e hizo uso del método del estudio de caso, a través de entrevistas en profundidad con los empresarios, sucesores y dos gerentes de dos hoteles en Curitiba, sector que tiene una alta visibilidad y crecimiento en los últimos años. Al final del estudio, se concluyó que la transición de la pequeña para la mediana empresa afecta las decisiones em el sentido de i) aumentar la formalización de los procesos, ii) existe una mayor delegación de pequeños poderes, iii) hay una mayor distancia entre los empleados y la la alta dirección, iv) tienen una mayor preocupación por la formación de los empleados, v) tener en cuenta los aspectos racionales de decisión vi) ser un equipo de apoyo para la toma de decisiones, vii) ser una preocupación para el largo plazo, viii) responsabilidades se hacen más claras y ix) mayor autonomía se delega a los empleados.O presente estudo busca analisar como as mudanças ocasionadas pelo crescimento da empresa afetam o processo decisório, com foco na transição de pequena para média empresa. Tal tema é muito pouco explorado na literatura, principalmente sob os aspectos abordados pelas lógicas Effectuation e Causation, descritas por Sarasvathy (2001).  A pesquisa teve caráter qualitativo e exploratório e fez uso do método de estudos de casos, por meio de entrevistas em profundidade com empreendedores, sucessores e gerentes de dois hotéis na cidade de Curitiba, setor este que apresenta grande visibilidade e crescimento nos últimos anos.
