Tourism and heritage conservation as seen by dwellers of Praia Grande neighborhood in São Luis (Maranhão State)

Resumo: In order to assess interferences of tourism in leisure spaces and everyday life, the article analyzes how dwellers of the historic center of São Luis (Maranhão State) see tourism activities in Praia Grande neighborhood. Relations between tourism and heritage are addressed, stressing potential and actual socio economic and cultural consequences of urban gentrification for tourism. A field research was conducted amongst dwellers the outcome of which was that heritage is not quite important for them as a tourist commodity. It was observed as well that not many steps for heritage conservation are taken. The results suggest that local heritage sustainability must be promoted, stimulating community to see their own neighborhood as valuable so they can benefit from tourism.

Aborda las relaciones entre turismo y patrimonio cultural, enfatizando las potencialidades y las consecuencias socio económicas y culturales provenientes de la valorización de los sitios urbanos para el turismo. A partir de una investigación de campo con los vecinos de la zona se constató la poca expresividad que el patrimonio tiene para estos y su vinculación como bien de consumo turístico, además de haberse observado reducidas acciones de preservación del patrimonio arquitectónico local. El estudio revela la necesidad de promover la sostenibilidad del patrimonio local, estimulando el sentimiento de valorización de la comunidad en relación al barrio Praia Grande, para que esta tenga acceso a los beneficios del turismo.Análise da visão dos moradores do Centro Histórico de São Luís - MA sobre o desenvolvimento da atividade turística implementada no bairro da Praia Grande, buscando constatar as interferências da atividade nos espaços de vida e lazer da comunidade local. Discorre sobre as relações entre turismo e legado cultural, enfatizando as potencialidades e as conseqüências sócio-econômicas e culturais decorrentes da valorização dos sítios urbanos para o turismo.  A partir da pesquisa de campo realizada junto aos moradores da área, constatou-se a reduzida expressividade que o patrimônio adquire para os moradores, com a sua vinculação como bem de consumo turístico, além de serem observadas reduzidas ações de preservação do acervo arquitetônico local.
