Transnational mobilities and the scholarship on favela tourism

Resumo: Favela tourism is the local and exemplary expression of slum tourism, visiting poor areas with the assistance of a guide and with a fee agreed between tourists and promoters. This article is a meta-analysis that discusses the multidisciplinary scholarship on favela tourism. We selected articles published in academic journals, books (monographs or collections), and book chapters, written in Portuguese, Spanish and English, MA theses and PhD dissertations carried out in Brazilian graduate programs, in a total of 146 bibliographic references. We demonstrate that, based on favela tourism, it is possible to address a wide range of themes that, ultimately, problematize the tense relationship between favelas and the rest of the city.

El turismo de favelas es la expresión local y ejemplar del slum tourism, visita a áreas populares con un guía y pago de un valor específico acordado entre turistas y agentes promotores. Este artículo es un meta-análisis, en el que se discuten los principios orientadores de la producción académica sobre el turismo de favelas. Seleccionamos artículos publicados en revistas académicas, libros (monográficos o compilaciones), y capítulos de libros, escritos en portugués, español e inglés, tesis de maestría y de doctorado realizadas en los programas de posgrado brasileños, en un total de 146 trabajos. Demonstramos que a partir del turismo de favelas se puede abordar un conjunto amplio de temas que, en última instancia, problematiza la tensa relación entre este tipo de asentamientos y el resto de la ciudad. O turismo em favelas é a expressão local e exemplar do slum tourism, visita a áreas pobres com a mediação de um guia e com um valor pago acordado entre turistas e agentes promotores. Este artigo é uma meta-análise que discute os princípios orientadores da produção acadêmica sobre o turismo em favelas. Selecionamos artigos publicados em periódicos acadêmicos, livros (monográficos ou coletâneas), e capítulos de livros, escritos em português, espanhol e inglês, dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutorado realizadas em programas de pós-graduação brasileiros, em um total de 146 trabalhos. Demonstramos que a partir do turismo em favelas é possível abordar um conjunto amplo de temas que, em última instância, problematiza a tensa relação entre favelas e o resto da cidade.
