“Quilt”, aesthetic experience and autobiographical narrative: future teachers and the art of listening

The purpose of this paper is to analyze “Quilt”, a formative and investigative device, methodology and epistemology developed in a Teacher Education Program. As a device intended for use in the early stages of a future teacher’s education, “Quilt” falls within the autobiographical research approach and consists in producing written, pictorial, and oral narratives. We work with Schiller’s (2002) concept of aesthetics as that which mediates between reason and sensitivity; Adorno’s (2002) concept of emancipation; Josso’s (2006) autobiographical narratives and Freire’s (2010) concept of autonomy, considering the link between aesthetic awareness and epistemological awareness. The methodology included a contextual questionnaire featuring questions on what “Quilt” participants liked and did not like about the experience. Data shows that “Quilt” can be considered a valuable methodology to listen to subjects, which postulates the existence of an aesthetic dimension in the constitution of one’s teaching identity.
