Violence against nursing team coming from people with mental disorder

This paper address the descriptive exploratory qualitative approach with 38 professional nursing team of the emergency department of a general and teaching hospital of Curitiba city, Paraná state, aiming to verify the ways of violence caused by patients with mental disorder to nursing professionals. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. It was used the technique of categorical thematic analysis and the data were organized into categories. The violence experienced by nursing team caused by mental disorder patients was, mostly, self-inflicted, with acts to hurt themselves, try suicide and against their families because of family conflicts, followed by verbal and physical violence, and, to a lesser extent, against the team. There is necessary to develop and release new researches with the same scope to be scientifically proven that attribute the violent nature to patients with mental disorder is a socially constructed myth.
