PROBIÓTICOS EM ENDODONTIA: UMA REVISÃO DE LITERATURA

Introduction: Probiotics are living microorganisms that benefit the health of their hosts. Its mechanisms of action, consist mainly of anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, that become important in the health-disease process. In endodontics, persistent infection within the root canal system is the main cause for failure in the endodontic treatment. From the success obtained by other dental specialties, the use of probiotics as a new approach in endodontic treatment has been the subject of research with the expectation of helping to fight endodontic infections and to maintain the balance of the oral microbiota. Objective: Thisliterature review aimed to present the main results available to date in the scientific literature on the use of probiotics in endodontics. Sources of data: The databases used were Pubmed, Web of Science and Embase. The search was carried out until June 2021. Synthesis of data: A total of eight articles on the topic were found,evaluating various aspects related to endodontic treatment, such as the use of probiotics against endodontic pathogens, as irrigants, as intracanal medication and in the treatment of apical periodontitis. Conclusion: Although most of the articles have shown positive results on the use of probiotics, they present a low level of evidence because the studies included were performed in vitro and in animals. Therefore, to support the introduction of probiotics in endodontics, there is a need for clinical studies.
