The Methods of Vertebral Heart Size (VHS) and Manubrium Heart Score Global (MHSG) were instituted to assist in the screening of patients with suspected cardiomegaly. The MHSG has been low studying, and propose to reduce the variables caused by VHS, Therefore, this study aims to correlate the two measures, defining if there is an agreement between them. This is a retrospective cohort study, which evaluated 22 chest X-ray images of dogs of various breeds without suspected cardiovascular changes. To obtain the VHS, the long and short axes of the heart were measured and compared with the thoracic vertebrae. Likewise, the same cardiac measurements and the length of the manubrium were used to obtain the MHSG by means of a formula, both in anterolateral projection. In the statistical analysis by Pearson's test, a correlation value (r) of 0.343 was observed between the values of VHS and MHSG within the confidence interval (95% CI) of -0.09 to 0.67 and the value of p = 0.117. The diagnosis of possible cardiomegaly was assessed by the Kappa test, with a value of 0.172. The values obtained lead to a low correlation between the variables, deducing that the technique still needs further studies to define its reference values for the different breeds, considering the presence or absence of heart disease. However, the VHS and MHS methods should only be used for patient screening, confirmation through echocardiography.
