Resumo: | Repetitive strain injuries and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (RSI/WMSD) are becoming the new epidemic of occupational diseases. This fact leads to desagreements on the whole laboral system, such as, spending on public health and social security as well as reduced productivity and employee displeasure. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of discomfort and the quality of life of the employees from three different sectors (Sector I = cleaning/maintenance; Sector II = Secretary; Sector III = clinics/laboratories) of a higher education institution. 146 employees were evaluated through Ergonomic Census questionnaires which evaluate the discomfort physical complaints and the SF-36 which evaluates the quality of life perception. The results were relevant with the other studies, in which 73.97% of the employees reported feeling some discomfort and 62.96% related discomfort with the role played in the workplace. The Sector I had a higher percentage of cases with discomfort complaints reaching 87.18% of cases, followed by the Sector II with 70.59% of cases and Sector III with 63.64% of cases. The region of the cervical spine was the place with most complaints with 46.29% of cases, followed by the shoulders (38.88%) and neck (36.11%). When separately analyzed, the Sector II showed significant correlation with the neck (p=0.05) and wrist (p=0.007), while the Sector I had significant correlation with the discomfort complaints in the legs (p=0.046). The results of the SF-36 questionnaire were generally satisfactory (average=74.51 points), with higher scores for physical limitations (84.24 points), followed by emotional aspects (83.77 points) and functional capacity (81.13 points). The pain items (66.15 points), vitality (62.80 points) and mental health (68.71 points) have the lowest scores. When separately analyzed, the Sector I had the lowest scores (average=70.73 points), mainly for the pain item (59.56 points) and mental health (58.66 points), while the sectors II and III had a higher score averaging 76.11 and 75.28 respectively. For these sectors, the vitality item presented the lowest grade, being 60.04 points for Sector II and 58.63 points for Sector III. When there is a desagreement on the laboral environment, being architectural, ergonomic, physical, social or emotional aspect, this same environment can become a harmful agent to its employees. Thus, the study demonstrates the necessity for the employees’periodic evaluations in order to avoid that discomforts and pains become serious health problems, such as WMSD. So, the study reported that employees’ complaints are related to the their function, because they showed discomfort in different parts of the body, relevant to the activity performed. From this study, it can be subsidized future improvement projects in the workplace based on proposed health-promoting universities. |

From this study, it can be subsidized future improvement projects in the workplace based on proposed health-promoting universities.
