Resumo: Records from the Inspection Division of animal products, controlled by Ministry of Agriculture (DIPOA) located in Concórdia, state of Santa Catarina, were used in order to define the prevalence of genus Metastrongylus in swine from 1976 to 1980. Simultaneously, a taxionomic study was carried out in some helminths of genus Metastrongylus from DIPOA'S collection of parasites and nematodes collected from lungs. Lungs collected in slaughterhouses of Santa Catarina State were submitted to an artificial digestion and to an anatomic histopathologic study. The average occurence of Metastrongylus spp, in the years studied was 0.42%, varying from 0.28% to 0.57%. Helminths from DIPOA’S collection as well as from lungs were classified in three species of genus Metastrongylus. No immature form was found in the material resulting from artificial digestion of lungs. The taxonomic study of 217 nematodes, showed that 84 (38.7%) were Metastrongylus salmi (Gedoelst 1923); 73 (37.7%) M. pudendotectus (Vostokov 1905) and 60 (27.6%) M. apri (Gmelin 1790). This was the first registry of these species in Santa Catarina State. The anatomic histopathologic exam showed that the macroscopic and microscopic lesions on the lung fragments were compatible with those observed in swine metastrongylosis. Finally, the main conclusion was that prevalence of swine metastrongylosis is low in the area envolved in this study, being. M. salmi the more frequent species.
