Affirmative action in stricto sensu graduate programs: analysis of the Universidade Federal do Paraná

Resumo: This article discusses the distribution of teachers and students by color/race in stricto sensu graduate programs of the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), analyzing the extent of white hegemony and the degree to which the black population was able to enter into the graduate programs. In the three academic levels (doctoral, academic master’s and professional master’s), the black population is under-represented in the student and teaching bodies. In the teaching body, the space of academic power, the under-representation of blacks is higher and their presence is residual – or practically non-existent – in some programs. The data demonstrate the high racial inequality in stricto sensu graduate programs in the UFPR, which justifies the creation of affirmative action policies in its other academic levels besides the graduate programs.

En los tres niveles académicos (doctorado, maestría académica y maestría profesional), hay una escasa representación de la población negra en los cuerpos discente y docente. En el cuerpo docente, espacio de poder académico, la escasa representación de negroses mayor y su presencia es residual o prácticamente inexistente en algunos programas. Los datos demuestran la alta desigualdad racial en los programas de postgrado stricto sensu de la UFPR, lo que justifica la creación de políticas de acciones afirmativas en sus otros niveles académicos más allá de la graduación.Cet article étudie la distribution par couleur/race des enseignants et des étudiants des programmes de deuxième et troisième cycles stricto sensu de l’Universidade Federal do Paraná(UFPR). Il analyse la portée de l’hégémonie blanche et dans quelle mesure la population noire a réussi à entrer dans ces niveaux académiques. Au niveau du doctorat, maitrises académique et professionnel, la population noire est sous-représentée dans le corps enseignant aussi bien que chez les étudiants. Chez le corps enseignant, où reside le pouvoir académique, la sousreprésentation des noirs est frappante et leur présence résiduelle, voire inexistante dans certains programmes. La forte inégalité raciale présente dans les programmes de deuxième ettroisième cycles stricto sensu de l’UFPR justifie la création de politiques d’action affirmative.O artigo discute a distribuição por cor/raça de docentes e discentes nos programas de pós-graduação stricto sensu da Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), analisando a extensão da hegemonia branca e em que medida a população negra conseguiu ascender ao espaço da pós-graduação. Nos três níveis acadêmicos (doutorado, mestrado acadêmico e mestrado profissional), há sub-representação da população negra nos corpos discente e docente. No corpo docente, espaço de poder acadêmico, a sub-representação de negros é maior e sua presença é residual ou praticamente inexistente em alguns programas.
