Resumo: This essays discusses the relation of words to a circuit of meaning that includes actions and objects. My thinking is shaped by the special problems of doing oral history on professionalized cultural movements. I begin with a model that places expressive forms within a circuit of communication that circulates through diverse locations. I then consider the limitations imposed upon oral history by its focus on the oral narrative as the clearest expression of the subject. I conclude with a utopian proposal for decentering the collection of narratives as the principal activity of oral history work.

Editora FGV2002-05-31info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2175Revista Estudos Históricos; Vol. 2 No. 30 (2002): Art and History; 76-90Revista Estudos Históricos; v. 2 n. 30 (2002): Arte e História; 76-902178-14940103-2186reponame:Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVporhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2175/1314Smith, Richard Cándidainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2017-06-14T21:00:08Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/2175Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rehONGhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/oai||biblioteca.digital@fgv.br||eh@fgv.br2178-14940103-2186opendoar:2024-03-06T13:01:40.335711Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
