Resumo: This article examines historical aspects of linguistic nationalization in Brazil relating them to the enslavement of Africans and their descendents during the period of State formation (c. 1822-1870). In addition to the discussion of a few intellectual paradigms, the analysis of newspaper notices of slaves’ flights demonstrates the linguistic dimension of the relationship between the social groups involved.
