Resumo: The article studies the blooming of a particular kind of business in XIX century Rio de Janeiro: the production of images of the city. The blooming was related to the growth of a free parcel of the population (businessmen, artisans and artists) and to the wealth of a little group of customers. The development of photography in a market in wich technical reprodution consisted of lithography an xilograph, alongside with a change in aesthetic patterns, with the valuation of the exotic and the picturesque (landscapes, pictures of slaves and indians), greatly helped the development of this business.

Esse desenvolvimento estava relacionado ao crescimento de uma parcela livre da população (negociantes, artesãos e artistas) e ao poder de compra bastante elevado de uma pequena clientela da cidade.
