Resumo: Currently available anti-HIV drugs can be classified into six categories: (a) nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), (b) non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), (c) protease inhibitors (PIs), (d) fusion inhibitors (IFs), (e) entry inhibitors (EIs) and (f) integrase inhibitors (IIs). Due to the rapid spread of HIV strains resistant to all the major anti-HIV drugs on the market, we urgently need to develop new drugs to fight against AIDS. In this context, due to the importance of nature in the development of new drugs, the aim of the present review is to highlight a series of new and promising anti-HIV agents derived from natural products virus acting on reverse transcriptase enzyme, which are essential for HIV replication.
