Resumo: | The controversy about the legitimacy of relationships for pleasure and for utility as genuine kinds of friendships in the Nicomachean Ethics (NE) is here studied, with a discussion about Aristotle’s usage of the expression “wishing him good” (ἐκείνου ἕνεκα): (i) a self-centered wishing good to another, in the sense that X does something to Y for the sake of X herself/himself or (ii) a wishing good to another for her/his own sake, in the sense that X does something to Y for the sake of Y herself/himself. We take our stand on “ii”, where “wishing good” means wishing good to another for her/his own sake. Still, we defend the view that only friendship between virtuous people can be properly considered friendship in the NE. |
