Urban afforestation as an environmental education strategy in the context of a climate emergency in the city of Maputo

Resumo: The present research aimed to investigate the aspects related to the climate emergency in an urban afforestation action in the city of Maputo, Mozambique. The investigation adopted a qualitative approach and semi-structured interview, document analysis and direct observation as research instruments. The technical staff of the Municipal Council of that municipality was interviewed, the document analysis focused on the media and the observation took place in the area where the seedlings were planted during this action. The analyzes identified great fragility with regard to articulation with the climate emergency and environmental awareness. The importance of urban afforestation in the technicians' view was restricted to the ecosystem services provided, notably the microclimate. Due to the severity and urgency imposed by the climate emergency, we believe that actions of this nature are important opportunities for inserting discussions about socio-environmental problems.

Se entrevistó al personal técnico del Concejo Municipal de ese municipio, el análisis documental se centró en los medios de comunicación y la observación se realizó en el área donde se sembraron los plantones durante esta acción. Los análisis identificaron una gran fragilidad en cuanto a la articulación con la emergencia climática y la conciencia ambiental. La importancia de la forestación urbana en la visión de los técnicos se quedó restricta a los servicios ecosistémicos proporcionados, en particular el microclima. Debido a la gravedad y urgencia que impone la emergencia climática, creemos que acciones de esta naturaleza son oportunidades importantes para insertar discusiones sobre problemas socioambientales.A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo investigar os aspectos relativos à emergência climática em uma ação de arborização urbana na cidade de Maputo, Moçambique. A investigação adotou a abordagem qualitativa por meio de entrevista semiestruturada, análise documental e observação direta como instrumentos de pesquisa. O corpo técnico do Conselho Municipal do referido município foi entrevistado, aanálise documental focalizou as mídias e a observação ocorreu na área do plantio das mudas durante essa ação.As análises identificaram grande fragilidade no que diz respeito a articulação com a emergência climática e sensibilização ambiental.
