Resumo: Epidural anesthesia is a technique that involves administering local anesthetic close to the spinal cord to block the sensation of pain in a specific region of the body. In orthopedic hip surgeries in the elderly, it is often chosen due to its effective analgesic effect and lower overall impact on the body compared to general anesthesia. However, the decision on the type of anesthesia should be made based on individual medical assessment. Epidural anesthesia works by temporarily blocking pain signals transmitted by nerves in the spinal cord region. A local anesthetic is injected into the epidural space, which is located outside the membrane surrounding the spinal cord. This impedes the conduction of nerve impulses, resulting in numbness and reduced pain sensation in the specific area of the body where the anesthesia is administered. It is a common option for surgeries and procedures involving lower areas of the body, such as orthopedic hip surgery. The objective of this study is to understand the action of epidural anesthesia in this type of procedure. The results of epidural anesthesia generally include the absence of pain in the affected region during the surgical procedure. Furthermore, as epidural anesthesia allows for greater preservation of respiratory function and other autonomic reflexes compared to general anesthesia, it may contribute to faster postoperative recovery.

Furthermore, as epidural anesthesia allows for greater preservation of respiratory function and other autonomic reflexes compared to general anesthesia, it may contribute to faster postoperative recovery. Specialized Dentistry Group2024-02-23info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/article/view/153810.36557/2674-8169.2024v6n2p2036-2056Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; Vol. 6 No. 2 (2024): BJIHS QUALIS B3; 2036-2056Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; Vol. 6 Núm. 2 (2024): BJIHS QUALIS B3; 2036-2056Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; v. 6 n. 2 (2024): BJIHS QUALIS B3; 2036-20562674-8169reponame:Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciencesinstname:Grupo de Odontologia Especializada (GOE)instacron:GOEporhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/article/view/1538/1727Copyright (c) 2024 Eliel Pessôa de Souza Júnior , Fernanda Holanda Aguiar , Giovana Bruno Lima , Erik Kazuo Shimizu, César Felipe Sousa Rodrigues , Itamar Francisco da Silva Júnior , Lucas Brasil Carneiro , Antônio José Araújo, Julio Cesar Denis Ricaldi Arrieta , Ingrid Hovsepian de Souza, Fernanda Pereira Dias , Thaisa Pereira Matos , Nathalia Salvagni Castro, Iury Matheus Holanda de Sousahttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessJúnior , Eliel Pessôa de SouzaAguiar , Fernanda HolandaLima , Giovana Bruno Shimizu, Erik KazuoRodrigues , César Felipe Sousa Júnior , Itamar Francisco da SilvaCarneiro , Lucas BrasilPinheiro, Antônio José Araújo Arrieta , Julio Cesar Denis Ricaldi Souza, Ingrid Hovsepian de Dias , Fernanda PereiraMatos , Thaisa PereiraCastro, Nathalia SalvagniSousa, Iury Matheus Holanda de2024-02-24T20:25:56Zoai:ojs.bjihs.emnuvens.com.br:article/1538Revistahttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihsONGhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/oaijournal.bjihs@periodicosbrasil.com.br2674-81692674-8169opendoar:2024-02-24T20:25:56Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences - Grupo de Odontologia Especializada (GOE)false
