Ecological contribution of entomofauna (Arthropoda: Insecta) to an organic crop

Resumo: | The dominance in terms of entomofauna abundance in ecosystems is mainly due to the ecological functions they have. Insects are essential for the maintenance of agroecosystems as they interfere in the primary production of the crop. Conserving the abundance of beneficial entomofauna in agroecosystems is crucial for the stability of the habitat. This work was done to analyze the composition and structure of the insect community present in polycultures of organic vegetable crops in the southern region of Santa Catarina. The research was carried out at Chácara Koscrevic, located in the city of Laguna, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Six samples were taken in the summer of 2019/2020 and in the spring of 2020 using baited pitfall traps (sardines and honey) and randomly distributed by cultivation according to crop rotation. A total of 4,303 individuals were registered, distributed in eight orders, with Coleoptera and Hymenoptera being the most abundant. In terms of dominance, Coleoptera individuals prevailed in summer, totaling 1,106 individuals, and Hymenoptera in spring, with 628 individuals. The data indicate that the structure of the entomofauna can be affected by the climatic season. The fauna in summer is more diverse when compared to spring, following the characteristic pattern of insects. The edaphic attributes have significance in relation to fauna, that is, they interfere in its structure. The presence of beneficial insects was observed, such as specimens of Dermaptera, Staphylinidae and Megacephala (Tetracha) fulgida, contributing to the biological control of pests and the pollination of cultivated plants, demonstrating sustainability in organic crops. |

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar la composición y estructura de la comunidad de insectos presente en un policultivo de hortalizas orgánicas en la región sur de Santa Catarina. La investigación se llevó a cabo en Chácara Koscrevic, ubicada en el municipio de Laguna, Santa Catarina, Brasil. Se tomaron seis muestras en el verano de 2019/2020 y en la primavera de 2020 con la ayuda de trampas de caída con cebo (sardinas y miel) y se distribuyeron aleatoriamente por cultivo de acuerdo con la rotación de cultivos. Se registraron un total de 4.303 individuos, distribuidos en ocho órdenes, siendo Coleoptera y Hymenoptera los más abundantes. En cuanto a dominancia, los individuos de coleópteros predominaron en verano, con un total de 1106 individuos, y los himenópteros en primavera, con 628 individuos. Los datos indican que la estructura de la entomofauna puede verse afectada por la temporada climática. La fauna en verano es más diversa que en primavera, siguiendo el patrón característico de los insectos. Los atributos edáficos tienen importancia en relación a la fauna, es decir, interfieren en su estructura. Se observó la presencia de insectos benéficos, como ejemplares de Dermaptera, Staphylinidae y Megacephala (Tetracha) fulgida, contribuyendo al control biológico de plagas y la polinización de plantas cultivadas y a la sostenibilidad en cultivos orgánicos.A dominância em termos de abundância da entomofauna nos ecossistemas se dá especialmente pelas variadas funções ecológicas que possuem. Foram realizadas seis amostragens no verão de 2019/2020 e na primavera de 2020 com auxílio de armadilhas de queda tipo pitfall iscadas (sardinha e mel) e distribuídas aleatoriamente por cultivo de acordo com a rotação de culturas. Foi registrado um total de 4.303 indivíduos, distribuídos em oito ordens, sendo Coleoptera e Hymenoptera as mais abundantes. Em termos de dominância, no verão prevaleceu indivíduos de Coleoptera, totalizando 1.106 indivíduos e na primavera Hymenoptera, com 628 indivíduos. Os dados indicam que a estrutura da entomofauna pode ser afetada pela estação climática. A fauna no verão é mais diversa, quando comparada com a primavera, seguindo o padrão característico dos insetos. Os atributos edáficos têm significância em relação a fauna e interferem na sua estrutura.
