Sustainable backyards and food safety: a case study in land reform settlements in the municipality of Canguçu (Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil)

The Sustainable Backyards project — support for the structuring and sustainable production of food (SB), consists of a public policy for the inclusion and productive structuring of families of farmers settled by the National and State Land Reform Program in situations of poverty and insecurity food and nutrition in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This article sought to analyze the development of the SB after the four-year period of its public notice (2013-2017), in the municipality of Canguçu / RS. To this end, visits were made to beneficiary families, observations, conversations and free interviews with settlers. A qualitative methodology, of the exploratory type, was used, which made it possible to verify positive changes in family dynamics resulting from the implementation of backyards. It was also found that the search for and struggle for food sovereignty permeates subjective factors rarely identified and taken into account in the process of creating, implementing and subsequently evaluating rural public politics.
