Resumo: The study developed in this article aims to demonstrate the relevance of the role of nurses in promoting quality of life for the elderly. The aging of the population must be accompanied by an understanding of its complexity, its implications for society as a whole. Therefore, the government has the responsibility to implement programs for the care of the elderly, with a multidisciplinary team to provide them with quality of life. In this sense, it is found that the performance of nurses, within this reality is of great relevance, because this professional with the appropriate technical and scientific competence can contribute to the promotion of quality of life of the elderly. The methodology used in this work consisted of a systematic review of qualitative literature on the approach, performed in the databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Google Scholar. It was found that nursing professionals play an important role in assisting the elderly, but as long as they have as a guiding principle of their intervention, comprehensive care, which perceives the elderly in the biological, psychological and social dimensions. By broadening his view of the elderly, their particularities and needs, this professional breaks with a biological model, focused solely on the disease. This holistic conception of nurses provides the elderly with considerable improvements in their longevity and quality of life, becoming an autonomous person.
