Resumo: Medicines play an important role in healthcare systems as they have the potential to save lives and improve health, however their indiscriminate use can lead to health problems. The COVID-19 pandemic favored a climate of fear, uncertainty and, above all, despair due to the lack of knowledge of the extent of infection by the new virus. This is a Literature Review study, carried out from free digital databases and guided by the objective of identifying the risks of self-medication concomitant with the COVID-19 pandemic and understanding the role of the pharmaceutical professional in this pandemic scenario. The study showed that the potential problems related to the demand and commercial promotion of medicines in pandemic times must be faced with ethics and professionalism. The pandemic has had a major impact on the daily lives of the world's population and the search for preventive medication has grown worldwide. The pharmacist must assume a leading role in guiding consumers about the risks and dangers of self-medication, which must be rational and conscious, which is one of the great challenges in the recent pandemic scenario.
