Avaliação do uso de um aparelho intra-oral no tratamento de pacientes obesos mórbidos portadores da síndrome das apnéias/hipopnéias obstrutivas do sono grave

A “before- and-after” study was carried out with the primary objective of evaluating the response to the use of an intra-oral appliance for the treatment of morbidly obese patients with serious Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). The sample was composed by five patients with body mass index (BMI) higher than 40 kg/m2 and Apnea/Hypopnea Index (AHI) higher than 30 events/h, observed by baseline polysomnography. The patients worn an intra-oral appliance for a mean of 34,6 days and undertook a second polysomnography, in order to compare the AHI, the oxygen saturation (SaO2), nadir, sleep efficiency and Epworth Sleepiness Scale before and after treatment. The differences observed were not statisticaly significant (signal test, p > 0,05), AHI decreased 18,17%, but it just improved OSAS severity. Treatment for severe OSAS with IA for this population should be rigorously followed up with polysomnography.
