Resumo: This study was carried out at a Municipal Health Unit located in Rio de Janeiro. It surveyed 342 mothers with children up to months okd and analysed breast-feeding period and types as well as the reasons for early weaning. The average period of breast-feeding alone was 39 days and of breast-feeding combined with bottles was 56 days. The reasons for early weaning were: “veak milk” (20,5%); “little milk” (11,8%); “the milk has dried up” (14,7%) and “| don't know" (8,9%) showing that mothers do not know their own body. In order to guide the health personnel activities concerning the breast-feeding period, this paper proposes an efficiency pattern where at least 50% of the breast-fed children admitted at the Municipal Health Unit will still be breast-fed when they are 3 months old.
