Este trabalho analisa a evolução da primeira tipologia de instituições para a acção colectiva (OSTROM, 1990) a proliferar em Portugal durante o período liberal – As Associações de Socorros Mútuos – que foram também as que alcançaram o maior número de sócios e determinaram os mais significativos impactos no processo histórico. Ilustra com detalhe o paternalismo e o interclassismo primordiais, tendo como base o caso de estudo dos subúrbios industriais lisboetas, de que forma tais associações emergem de ancestrais laços de ofício e evoluem no sentido de superar o corporativismo, o paternalismo e o interclassismo. Destaca o alargamento das suas bases sociais e os factores de inclusão e exclusão, como o enraizamento local e a escassa integração das mulheres, respectivamente. Sublinha finalmente a importância desse movimento na reorganização e formalização de antigas práticas de entreajuda e no desenvolvimento de mais abrangentes solidariedades horizontais entre as comunidades operárias, o que desempenhou um papel fundamental na emergência do movimento operário organizado. AbstractThis article analyses the evolution of the first typology of institutions for collective action (OSTROM, 1990) to proliferate in Portugal during the liberal period. The mutual-aid associations have achieved the highest number of members and have also determined the most significant impacts in the historical process. Based on the Lisbon's industrial suburbs case study, this text illustrates in detail how they emerge from ancestral craft ties and progress to overcome the primordial corporatism, paternalism and inter-classism. It highlights the broadening of their social bases and the factors of inclusion and exclusion, as well as the local roots and poor integration of women, respectively. It finally underlines the importance of this movement in the reorganization and formalization of ancient practices of mutual aid and the development of more comprehensive horizontal solidarity between working class communities, playing a key role in the emergence of the organized labour movement.Keywords: Mutual-aid Movement; Corporative legacy; Working-class communities; Social Bases; Labour movement.
