Revisiting social actors and psychotropic territories in Porto: a twenty years ethnographic perspective

Resumo: This paper describes and analyses the development of psychotropic actors and territories from the early 90’s until today, based on two ethnographies carried out in the city of Porto (Portugal). The second ethnography, currently ongoing, is a revisitation of the first one, which was undertaken by one of the authors in the 90’s. In both ethnographies, the research units are territories located in housing estates – or their surroundings – in which there is a concentration of individuals with commercial or consumptive interests in drugs. Both studies portray the territorial dynamics of the drugs phenomenon, as well as its main protagonists in psychotropic territories that the media describe as “drug neighborhoods”. We explore the phenomenology of the “junkie”, describing his/her practices and ways of living, the functions he/she may perform in the operation of the psychotropic territory, and the strategies he/she develops to finance his/her drug use. The current actors’ sociographic profile is similar to the one described in the first study, the difference being that in the past there were many younger individuals. Regarding the psychotropic territories, this revisitation authorizes stating the stability of their characteristics and operation; their longevity in terms of location, dynamics and functions; their great resistance to police charges.

La segunda, actualmente en curso, es la revisitación de la primera, realizada por uno de los actores en los años 90. Las unidades de estudio, tanto en la primera etnografía como en la actual, son espacios situados en el interior de barrios sociales o en sus inmediaciones en las cuales hay concentración de individuos con intereses en las drogas, sean ellos comerciales o de consumo. Ambas investigaciones caracterizan las dinámicas territoriales del fenómeno droga bien como sus principales protagonistas en territorios psicotrópicos que se convierten referencias en el discurso mediático como “barrios de las drogas”. En relación con los actores profundizamos en la fenomenología del “agarrado”, describiendo sus prácticas y vivencias, las diversas funciones que puede desempeñar en el funcionamiento del territorio psicotrópico, las estrategias que desarrolla en la calle para conseguir financiar su consumo. Hoy encontramos el mismo perfil sociográfico de los actores que caracterizamos en la primera investigación, si exceptuamos el hecho de encontrar bastantes individuos más jóvenes. En cuanto a los territorios psicotrópicos, la posibilidad de verlos con una distancia de 20 años entre las dos etnografías permite anotar: la estabilidad temporal de sus características y funcionamiento; la longevidad de algunos de ellos, que hoy continúan con su localización, dinámicas y funciones más o menos inalteradas; gran capacidad de resistencia a las investidas policiales.Este artigo tem como proposta acompanhar a evolução dos atores e dos territórios psicotrópicos desde o início dos anos 90 até à atualidade, tendo por base o conhecimento gerado por duas investigações etnográficas levadas a cabo no Porto. A segunda, atualmente em curso, é a revisitação da primeira, realizada por um dos autores nos anos 90. As unidades de estudo, tanto na primeira etnografia como na atual, são espaços situados no interior de bairros sociais ou nas suas imediações nos quais há concentração de indivíduos com interesses nas drogas, sejam eles comerciais ou de consumo. Ambas as pesquisas caracterizam as dinâmicas territoriais do fenómeno droga bem como os seus principais protagonistas em territórios psicotrópicos que se tornaram referenciados no discurso mediático como “bairros das drogas”. Relativamente aos atores aprofundamos a fenomenologia do “agarrado”, descrevendo as suas práticas e vivências, as funções várias que pode desempenhar no funcionamento do território psicotrópico, as estratégias que desenvolve na rua para conseguir financiar o seu consumo. Encontramos hoje sensivelmente o mesmo perfil sociográfico dos atores que caracterizámos na primeira investigação, se excetuarmos o facto de naquela altura haver bastantes indivíduos mais jovens.
