Recovering the autonomous space for the “politician”: the diagnostic of a tension that challenges the logic of modern liberalism

Resumo: The paper intends to diagnose the challenges faced by the concept of Liberal State of Law in view of the so called “new” social movements which point out to structural problems of that model of state. Therefore, it tries to determinate the role of these social actors that demand the return of an autonomous space for the “politician” in the modern liberal community. The analyses presented by J. J. Rousseau and Carl Schmitt are the theoretical support used, as far as they show potentially fertile arguments in their diagnoses about the growing contradictions that mark the existence of the modern state. Key words: Social movements; Liberal State of Law; space of the politician; liberalism.

Key words: Social movements; Liberal State of Law; space of the politician; liberalism.O presente artigo tem por objetivo diagnosticar os desafios atuais que enfrenta a noção de Estado Liberal de Direito ante a emergência dos “novos” movimentos sociais, os quais apontam para os problemas estruturais que atravessa este modelo de estado. Neste sentido, busca determinar a função destes agentes sociais que estariam a exigir o retorno de um espaço autônomo do “político” na comunidade liberal moderna. Como recurso teórico são utilizadas as análises de J. J. Rousseau e Carl Schmitt pelo rico potencial argumentativo de suas diagnoses sobre as crescentes contradições que passaram a marcar a existência do estado moderno.
