The dictionaries of Wittgenstein and of Baruk: linguistic meaning in teaching and learning of mathematics

Resumo: In this paper we try to discuss the relationships between natural language, mathematical language and the meaning of linguistic expressions in mathematical texts in situations of teaching and learning. Therefore, we point out the importance of understanding the meaning of the uses of the words in their particular contexts, based on in the case of Wittgenstein, who prepared a german spelling dictionary and in the case of the french re-educator Stella Baruk, who prepared a dictionary of mathematics, exposing the reasons why these authors made their dictionaries. We conclude with some reflections that point to the importance of a satisfactory understanding of the mathematical vocabulary in class.

Por lo tanto, señalamos la importancia de comprender el significado de los usos de las palabras en sus contextos particulares, con base en el caso de Wittgenstein, quien preparó un diccionario ortográfico alemán y en el caso de la reeducadora francesa Stella Baruk, que preparó un diccionario de matemática, exponiendo las razones por las que estos autores hicieron sus diccionarios. Concluimos con algunas reflexiones que apuntan a la importancia de una comprensión satisfactoria del vocabulario matemático en clase.Neste texto procuramos discutir as relações entre a linguagem natural, a linguagem matemática e o significado de expressões linguísticas em textos matemáticos em situações de ensino e de aprendizagem. Apontaremos a importância de compreender o significado dos usos das palavras em seus contextos particulares, amparando-nos no caso de Wittgenstein, que elaborou um dicionário de ortografia alemã, e no caso da reeducadora francesa Stella Baruk, que elaborou um dicionário de matemática, expondo os motivos pelos quais estes autores elaboraram seus dicionários.
