Movimento for democracy: the PCdoB’s political struggle in the alternative press during the process of Brazilian redemocratization (1979)

Resumo: From the second half of the 1970s, during the process of redemocratization in Brazil, the alternative press have been important to consolidate a public opinion against the military dictatorship and spread of a leftist culture, connected to democratic values. Created in 1975, the alternative newspaper called Movimento has attracted journalists that didn`t have spaces in major newspapers and activists from many political groups, especially those of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB). After abandoning the strategy of armed combat, many of those, who have survived the repression, have felt the need to engage in the legal political combat for democratic freedoms and have adopted Movimento as mouthpiece for their demands. The proposal, therefore, is to reflect about Brazilian left`s strategies of struggle for representative democracy through the Movimento`s pages.

Creado en 1975, el periódico alternativo llamado Movimento ha atraído periodistas que no tenían espacios en la grande prensa y activistas de diversos grupos políticos, especialmente el Partido Comunista de Brasil (PCdoB). Después del abandono de la estrategia de lucha armada, los que sobrevivieron a la epresión han sentido la necesidad de participar de la lucha política legal por las libertades democráticas y han adoptado Movimento como portavoz de sus demandas. La propuesta, por lo tanto, es reflexionar sobre las estrategias de lucha de sectores de la izquierda brasileña por la democracia representativa en las páginas de Movimento.A partir da segunda metade dos anos 1970, durante o processo de abertura política no Brasil, a imprensa alternativa assumiu um papel fundamental na criação de uma opinião pública antiditadura e na propagação de uma cultura de esquerda, ligada aos valores democráticos. Criado em 1975, o jornal Movimento atraiu, além de jornalistas sem espaços na grande imprensa, militantes de diversas correntes políticas, sobretudo do Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB). Abandonando a estratégia da luta armada, parte daqueles que sobreviveram à repressão sentiram a necessidade de engajamento na luta política legal pelas liberdades democráticas e adotaram Movimento como porta-voz de suas demandas.
