The objective of this article is to analyze the novel Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881) by Machado de Assis, which highlights the role of bourgeois women in Rio de Janeiro society at the end of the 19th century through Machado's perspective. In the construction of the article, we sought to treat a brief overview of nineteenth-century society in Brazil, in particular the historical context of the production of the work, marked by the so-called "Generation of 1870", a moment that began a process of great changes in Brazil, marked by the emergence of “new ideas” and sensitivity, largely imported from Europe and adapted to Brazil at the time. It was during this period that the novel that composes the body of this article was born – Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas – a literary novel in which Machado de Assis outlined criticisms of customs, vices and the social structure of that period, including the dynamic of women in this society
