The present study seeks to briefly and critically to approach the collation institute, paying attention to te controversial points. Since it is the subject of superficial and contradictory analyzes because of the predictions of the laws that regulate it. Six major themes are analyzed. Initially the concept and the foundations of the collation are exposed. In a continuous act, the heirs are forced to collate. Then it is about which goods will be brought to the collation. The next theme concerns the form and means by which donated goods are to be collated. The penultimate theme consists of approach the inheritance share of one´s parents, its concept, hundamentals, calculations and values of goods, hypothesis of exemption from collation and reduction by harmlessness. And finally, the judicial procedure of effect the collation, as well as the controversial prescription of the right to demand the collation
