José, esposo de Maria, o justo a serviço do Reino (cf. Mt 1,19a): uma reflexão sobre a prática da justiça na tradição judaico-cristã

When one reads in the Gospel of Matthew that Mary's husband Joseph is called “righteous” (cf. Mt 1:19), one should not conclude that this is a random and thoughtless reference of the evangelist, despite its brevity. On the contrary, the term “righteous” points to a long tradition that runs through the entire First Testament. The Second Testament itself, in the light of Christ's saving event, will continue the reflection on who is righteous in God's eyes, a reflection that has been continued in the Church's tradition. In the Jewish scope, in turn, the rabbinical tradition also contributes to meditation on the righteous and the practice of justice. This research aims to analyze this rich tradition in three chapters and contrast it with Joseph's character, the father of Jesus, as he appears in Matthew's Gospel, in order to highlight his role in God's plan of salvation in Christ
